Therapist-Client Relationship
Good Therapist-Client Relationship
CBT is evidence-based, but how CBT is delivered can vary between therapists, and this is influenced by the therapist’s own expertise, clinical background and skills. It is therefore important for you to find a therapist whose style of therapy fits with your needs, goals and also your personality. There are many therapists out there, but it is important that you find someone that you work well with.
For me, building a good therapeutic relationship with the client is a key part of my practice and I also believe that the therapeutic relationship plays a significant part in a client’s recovery. I provide a warm and safe environment, where clients can feel able to open up about their difficulties, without feeling judged. For me it is important that the client can build a trusting relationship with me, as this will allow them to share their problems, so that we can work on them together. My style of working is very collaborative, and I will often bring in my personality and even some humour (whilst maintaining professional boundaries), to make the client feel at ease. The nature of the problems that we are dealing with can be challenging, so I like to ensure that the client feels relaxed in the sessions.
